Chapter 28
The rain in Poole had stopped and autumn sun lit the wave tops. Here and there, out on the water, small boats sailed back and forth. In the distance on a patch of grass, a family was flying a kite. Karim and Dawud sat with Tony on the deck of the Suzie Q. They had pizza and drinks and for the first time in days, the tension had eased. Now and then someone would pass and call out to Tony and there would be banter back and forth.
Karim leaned against the side of the boat and closed his eyes. This had all gone wrong so quickly. In less than a week, his life, his job and his friends had all been put under threat or, it seemed very possible, lost altogether.
He knew Dawud was on the edge of panic and, although he was the younger one, it was him who had to keep things under control. Yes, what had happened was unfair, but it was too late now to keep going over it. He should have been stronger from the start. He had known what the right thing would have been, but in the end, Baba had his way. Baba always had his way, and now it looked as though they had been sacrificed for the good of the family.
What would he do in Pakistan? Where would they live? They could stay with family for a while, people they hardly knew, and then what? In spite of what he had said to Dawud, he was scared about the future – it was unpredictable. He was an accountant; he lived his life by rules and known outcomes; twisting in the wind was an anathema to him. He opened his eyes and looked around. Tony had gone below to use the head.
“Right, what are we going to do? We might as well get on the way. I don’t want to sit here until the ferry in the morning and certainly not for two days, and that’s assuming they get the boat fixed tomorrow. I reckon that with these new passports and now things might be settling down a bit, we could risk it. After all, the police are looking for us back at home, up in the Midlands. They’ve been to Mike’s and they’ve questioned Baba; they aren’t going to think we are going to France. Why would they think that?”
“I don’t know. What do you think Baba will have told them?”
“Well, he won’t have told them we are in France, will he? Surely not when he knows it’s where Tony was going to take us.”
“You need to find out. You need to ask him just what he said,” Dawud said.
“Okay. Then I’ll tell him we’re going to Dover and we’re going to risk the ferry.”
He dialled twice but all he heard was the engaged tone which flipped over to the message box. He knew Baba had call waiting but obviously he was too busy to speak just then. He sent a message.
